The future of electric mobility at Audi is highly dynamic: The R8 e-tron has set a world record for a production vehicle with an electric drive system on the Nurburgring Nordschleife – the toughest test track in the world. Racing driver Markus Winkelhock piloted the high-performance, all-electric-drive sports car around the demanding 20.8-kilometer (12.92-mile) track in 8:09.099 minutes. With this Audi has achieved yet another milestone in its history, following overall wins at the 24-hour races at the Nurburgring and Le Mans.

For future use in its electric ‘e-tron’ models, AUDI has developed ‘e-sound’, a realtime technique of generating synthetic motor sounds for the essentially silent vehicle in order to warn pedestrians and cyclists of the car’s proximity. while recent legislative efforts in the US are making it mandatory that companies add artificial engine sounds to electric vehicles, manufacturers are taking the requirement as an opportunity to experiment with the creation of a perfect sound signature to represent the brand. Project partners Audi, E.ON, the Munich municipal utility company Stadtwerke München (SWM) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) today sounded the starting gun for a fleet trial with electric cars in the Munich model region. By the middle of next year, 20 Audi A1 e-tron models will successively take to the region’s roads and around 200 new charging stations will be installed. The “eflott” project is part of the “Model Region Electromobility Munich” sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Transport. It will address a number of issues from the data transfer between the driver, vehicle and electric filling station to the power grid. The Audi team secured a double victory for the four rings in the inaugural “Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010” and the 13th “Silvretta Classic Montafon” with the Audi e-tron technology demonstrator based on the R8 and the Audi ur-quattro from 1988. Three-time Mille Miglia winner Luciano Viaro clinched first place in the classic car rally. Development Chief Michael Dick and works driver Lucas Luhr took the Audi e-tron electric sports car across the finishing line with the best result over a course of 167.5 kilometers (104.08 miles). Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has given the starting signal for the “National Electric Mobility Platform” (NEMP), in which AUDI AG is also actively participating. With this initiative the Federal Government has set itself the goal of developing Germany into a leading market for electric mobility. The founding event on Monday in Berlin also included top-level discussions between the Federal Government and representatives from industry, science and professional associations. (continue reading…)

The Audi e-tron makes use of the popular film location as the backdrop for a relaxing cruise.
Audi has set up a new division to develop and produce a range of high-priced “e-tron” electric cars starting in 2012.
The e-tron subbrand’s first vehicle will be based on an electric sports car concept shown at the Frankfurt auto show last autumn.
Insiders said Audi also is likely to approve production of a smaller e-tron sports car concept unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January. Both cars will have an e-tron badge but also will have individual names. (continue reading…)
