An excellent result for the Audi R15 TDI’s final hurrah. The 12 Hours of Sebring will be the first race for all in 2011 and yet the last race the R15 TDI era. While most knew Peugeot would be fast and take pole, the R15 was right there. Sarrazin did pull out an amazing 1:46.57 lap to take pole, with Romain Dumas right behind with a 1:47.680. Tom Kristensen put the #2 R15 TDI on 4th with a 1:48.173. Once again, it’s a 12 hour race and there will be over 50 cars spread over 3.7 miles. Gallery after the jump. Here are a few clips of the Audi R15 plus testing at Monza in preparation for the upcoming season, using the pre-1973 track section configuration, no first chicane, straight into the “Curva Grande”.
Word got out that Mike Rockenfeller wiped the only Audi R15 plus during their testing yesterday at Sebring. After doing some high-speed testing on the ovals, Audi headed to Sebring to gain some much needed “Le Mans” data. Since Peugeot would not let Audi race with an interim model in fear of losing to it, Audi pulled in with 4 rigs and one R15 plus. (continue reading…)
Rumor has it that Mike “Rocky” Rockenfeller took out the only Audi R15 plus that Audi brought over from Ingolstadt. No pictures have surfaced and only one French site is reporting this. Yes, French! Supposedly, Audi had four 18 wheelers there and to bring one car over sounds a bit out of character.
Currently in Sebring for testing in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi saw its meeting disrupted the first day. Mike Rockenfeller, while driving the “R15 plus” hit the wall at the Turn 17 named Sunset Bend, the last before the pit straight. An incident that could have extremely damaging consequences for the Ingolstadt-based firm that has taken only one copy of its 2010 car in Florida. The question is whether or not the car is repairable… Certainly a major setback for Wolfgang Ullrich and his men.

Photographer Rob Murray was down at the Sebring test days last weekend and snapped these great pics of the Audi R15 TDI and Audi R8 LMS. Word has it this was the new R15 “plus” but we do not believe it was. We’ve matched up our old shots and these. Not much difference, if anything its under the hood!
