With Audi out of the American Le Mans Series, focused on winning the Le Mans 24 Hours it’s going to be great seeing the Audi R8 take the stage in race form. Phoenix Racing, of DTM fame, has put together a stunning car that will debut on April 25-26th at Zolder in the Belgian GT Championships. Check out the gallery for pictures from the event. Man, it is beautiful!
After 21 seasons of uninterrupted presence on the Belgian circuit, it is with regret that the Belgian Audi Club was not involved in any championship in 2008. To take the A4 following the Silhouette, the Belgian Audi Club needed a new challenge. The presentation by Audi Sport, an Audi R8 GT3 at the end of August has obviously aroused the envy of the club and officials of the mark for the ring in Belgium.
“After long months of negotiations and through excellent relationships with the heads of Audi Sport,” says JG Mal-Voy, President of the Belgian Audi Club, “We are pleased to announce that this year we will begin an Audi R8 GT3 in the Belgian GT. The Phoenix Racing team, mandated by the factory will support the preparation and maintenance of this fantastic car. ”
If the goal is certainly to claim victory, the title at the end of the season seems less realistic. The Belgian Audi Club did not participate in the 24 Hours of Zolder. “The FIA GT3 is not at all in races as long,” says JG Mal-Voy. “The experience of the last two years has shown that the GT3 is not scheduled to run 24 hours.”
Drivers side, there will be no great surprise. “We continue to trust Verbergt Tim and Jean-François Hemroulle,” continues JG Mal-Voy. “I am convinced that we have with these two drivers of one of the best duos ever. They are very fast, are understood to perfection and they are both parts of the country. What more can you ask for?”
Remember that Jean-François Hemroulle is part of the house since its appearance in the Junior Team in 1993. He then won the Belgian Procar’96 on an Audi A4 Supertourisme. It is always with this car that the Belgian Audi Club had tournament championship Belcar in the late’90s. Tim joined Verbergt Jean-François and the duo won the championship twice, with a victory hanging in the 24 Hours of Zolder. More recently, Jeff and Tim have won the Belgian Touring Car Series in 2003 on the Audi A4 Silhouette Light. Today, they seem more motivated than ever!
“This car made me dream when I saw her,” says Jean-François. “Given the seriousness of Audi Sport, I am sure she will be successful.” On Tim Verbergt, enthusiasm is also necessary. “The Belgian Audi Club is my second family,” he says. “I’m so happy to leave for a season with them on a car that can only dream of a driver.”
Now, the counting of days began before the start of the championship on 25 and 26 April at Zolder.
