On the second day of the official ITR tests, Audi again proved to be the benchmark. On Monday, Mattias Ekström had been the quickest and on Tuesday, his fellow Audi driver Timo Scheider clocked the fastest lap time of the day. At the wheel of the new Audi A4 DTM, Scheider lapped the 3.696-kilometre circuit located in the Magdeburger Börde region in 1:21.644 minutes. And although he had set this lap in the morning session, no other driver was able to complete a faster lap until the day of testing was over. Close behind Scheider: fellow Audi driver Markus Winkelhock who also had set his personal minimum time of 1:22.000 minutes before the lunch break.
Behind the Audi pairing, Mercedes-Benz drivers Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green finished third and fourth respectively. “It was a good day for us,” beamed the Canadian who joined the test action only on Tuesday afternoon. “Together with my team, I succeeded in completing our scheduled programme. Hence, I’m rather happy with our achievements. Tomorrow we will continue our work.” At the end of the day, he finished third with his 1:22.162-minute lap while Green secured fourth position on the time sheets by crossing the line in 1:22.341 minutes.
While the two HWA drivers experienced a normal day of testing, DTM rookie Maro Engel had to cope with beginning his work extremely late. Following a steering failure of Ralf Schumacher’s C-Class, repairing the car took the Mücke mechanics more time than expected. Hence, Engel had to wait until 17.30hrs to get the chance of joining the test action at the wheel of the 2007-spec AMG Mercedes C-Class. During the course of the remaining 30 minutes, he had to make do with completing 13 laps. “This was anything but enough,” said the visibly annoyed young gun. “I hope everything will run fine, tomorrow, and I will have the chance of completing a big number of laps.”
At the same time, Martin Tomczyk Alexandre Prémat and Timo Scheider completed a true marathon at the wheel of the Audi test car. In the morning, Tomczyk and Prémat alternated at the wheel of the black Audi A4 DTM and in the afternoon, they both were replaced by Timo Scheider. Altogether, the trio completed 202 laps, representing a total mileage of 746.592 kilometres. Kristensen switched from the test car to his new racing car, completed 91 laps and clocked a personal minimum time of 1:22.835 minutes. “It was the first time that I had the opportunity to drive my new Audi A4 DTM,” beamed the Dane. “And I realised as early as on the first laps that there is a big difference between this year’s car and its predecessor. We tested different setups, today, and the car responded very well to the changes – and that’s what testing is about.”
