With the Golf24 gaining much of the attention over the weekend, the two Scirocco GT24-CNG’s were quietly doing their thing. Leading up, testing and qualifying sessions went very well. The no117, driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah, Carlos Sainz and Giniel de Villiers and Klaus Niedzwiedz started 61st. The no116 had Vanina Ickx, Bernd Ostmann, Peter Wyss and Klaus Niedzwiedz (driving two cars) at the wheel and 66th on grid. They finished 27th and 46th respectively.
The Porsche teams have made a good start to the Nürburgring 24 hour race. After just over two hours and 17 laps on the legendary Eifel circuit, the innovative Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid fielded by the Porsche Team Manthey lies in second place. Start driver was Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), who shares the cockpit with his Porsche works driver colleagues Richard Lietz (Österreich), Marco Holzer (Lochau) und Patrick Long (USA). The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Manthey Racing with Porsche factory pilots Marc Lieb (Germany), Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) as well as Lucas Luhr (Switzerland) follow directly behind in third place. The Porsche teams are in a good position for Friday’s final qualifying for the 24 hour race. With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Manthey Racing, Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas together with Lucas Luhr posted sixth place. The quartet won the 24 hour race four times straight from 2006 to 2009.
The seventh quickest time was claimed by Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler, Peter Dumbreck, Martin Ragginger and Sebastian Asch in the 911 GT3 R of Falken Motorsport. Richard Westbrook, Christian Menzel, Mike Stursberg and Hans Guido Riegel planted their Haribo Team Manthey 911 GT3 R on the tenth grid spot. Days away from the start of the 39th running of the Nurburgring 24 Hour, Volkswagen gives us a glimpse of the three factory 450-hp Golf24′s that will race this weekend. During yesterdays VLN’s opening round at the Nurburgring, Hans-Joachim Stuck announced the Stuck family entry for this years 24 hour race in June. The 60 year old father will join his two sons, Johannes and Ferdinand in a Lamborghini Gallardo from Reiter Engineering. For those who didn’t know, Porsche sent a stock 911 GT3 RS out on a road trip. Destination was the Nurburgring 24 Hour race. Why? To race in the 38th Nurburgring 24 Hour Rennen. With the “S-GO 2400” number plate on, the 450hp, 3.8L powered Porsche took off for the Green Hell. Qualifying 42nd overall, the team battled its way up to 13th overall and then drove back home with zero problems. (continue reading…)
