The Audi R8 LMS won the most important endurance race for GT cars ahead of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Audi Sport Team WRT overcame the strongest competition during the 63rd running of the 24 hours of Spa (Belgium). The two DTM stars Mattias Ekstrom (Sweden) and Timo Scheider (Germany) and the Belgian endurance specialist Greg Franchi shared driving duties in the victorious mid-engine sportscar. Weather seems to always come into play at Spa. However, it decided to cooperate a bit for the first qualifying session for the 24 Hours of Spa. Again, Audi Sport looked to have the pace in damp conditions. Mattias Ekstrom would end up on top with a 2:40.472 in the W Racing Team Audi R8. With the parade complete, it’s now down to business at Spa-Francorchamps. We’ve had a small break after two incredible 24 hour races back in June. The 24 Hours of Spa is now an important part of the new Blancpain Endurance Series.

This year the 24 Hours of Spa is undoubtedly one of the greatest endurance races for GT cars. With a battle between all the most prestigious makes which we come across in the GT racing world, this 24 hours race at Spa, on 30th and 31st July promises to take its place in the annals of motorsport. Patrick Long, fresh off a win in American Le Mans Series competition at Lime Rock, Connecticut, rejoined his longtime French team IMSA Performance MATMUT to take 2nd both overall and in the GT2 class at the FIA-GT Total 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. Joining the team for the fourth consecutive year, Long drove the #16 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with fellow Porsche works drivers Patrick Pilet (FR), Richard Lietz (AT) and team principal Raymond Narac (FR). The sole American Porsche works driver, Patrick is the youngest American to win all four endurance sportscar ‘classics’ – the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rolex 24 At Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans. Spa-Francorchamps is among the most storied race tracks on the planet, with famous and fearsome corners like La Source, Eau Rouge, Raidillon and Blanchimont. 24 Hour races have been held at Spa since 1924 and Grand Prix racing since 1925. With 40 minutes to go indicated on the timing screens the leading BMW looked set to win the Total 24 Hours of Spa when Dirk Werner went off at Les Fagnes and what looked as a certain victory became a nightmare in sight of the finish line. The drama for BMW meant joy for Porsche as the #23 BMS Scuderia Italia Spa Porsche 911 GT3 RSR took the overall victory in the 63rd edition of the 24 Hours of Spa after 541 laps, winning the FIA GT2 European Cup in the process. Romain Dumas is now a double Spa winner, while Jorg Bergmeister, Martin Ragginger and Wolf Henzler took their maiden win in the Ardennes. Romain Dumas is also the first man to win Spa and Le Mans in the in the same year of the modern era of endurance racing and has also won the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
