With his Vodafone AMG Mercedes C-Class, Bernd Schneider set the fastest time in free practice of the DTM at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. The winner of the season opener at the Hockenheimring completed 34 laps, the fastest one in 1:16.791 minutes. Schneider’s time was quicker than the current race lap record, established by Mika Häkkinen last year (1:17.58 minutes).
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Veltins Audi A4 DTM), Tom Kristensen (Siemens Audi A4 DTM) and Martin Tomczyk (Red Bull Audi A4 DTM) occupied second through fourth place. Frentzen, who had a brief excursion into the gravel trap early into the session, fell 0.227 seconds short of Schneider’s time.
In the closing stages of the session, there was a collision on the back strecth between Vanina Ickx (Orig. Zubehör Audi A4) and Jamie Green (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Klasse). The Belgian lady racer, who just like on the day before was quicker than Susie Stoddart (AutoScout24 AMG Mercedes C-Klasse), started an attempt to overtake on the inside. Green claimed the ideal line and the two spun, but both managed to continue.
