On the podium at his home race: Volkswagen driver Edoardo Mortara defended his lead in the Formula 3 Euro Series at Mugello, clinching positions four and three.
At the first four of 20 races the 21-year-old from the Volkswagen Signature team captured as many as three podium places and is heading the overall standings with an equal points score together with the Finn Mika Mäki (Mercedes-Dallara).
With seventh place in qualifying on Friday, Mortara laid the foundation for two successful races: on Saturday the Italian, who lives in Geneva, Switzerland, managed the leap to fourth place thanks to a perfect start, at the second session on Sunday he advanced to third place after having started from fifth on the grid. Franck Mailleux (France) and Stefano Coletti (Monaco), who contest the series with a 210-hp engine from the Volkswagen Group as well, delivered strong performances too, but – finishing in positions 10 and 11 – missed scoring points. Jean Karl Vernay (France/Team Signature) as well as Maximilian Götz (Uffenheim, Germany), Jens Klingmann (Leimen, Germany) and Martin Plowman (Great Britain) from the RC Motorsport team experienced a difficult race weekend without points.
Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:
“Edoardo Mortara and the Signature team delivered a strong performance in both races. We are very satisfied with this result. Claiming a podium finish yet again shows what’s possible with a well-tuned package, consisting of the driver, team, tyres, chassis and, of course, the Volkswagen engine. Mugello, no doubt, is a difficult race track, it’s demanding for both the drivers and the setup. That’s why the fact that RC Motorsport has done less testing has had a negative impact.”
#7 – Edoardo Mortara (I), Volkswagen Dallara F308, Team Signature
Qualifying: 7th place – race 1: 4th place – race 2: 3rd place
“Standing on the podium here in Italy is a great result for me, for my team and for Volkswagen. Before the round, I’d been hoping for a place among the top eight, but throughout the weekend things were going better than expected. The team gave everything to pick up speed step by step. Another crucial factor was the two starts, at both of which I was able to make up some places.”
#8 – Franck Mailleux (F) – Volkswagen Dallara F308 – Team Signature
Qualifying: 19th place – race 1: 11th place – race 2: 10th place
“My lap times at Mugello were okay but, unfortunately, I’m leaving without points. After settling in with the Signature team and getting along better and better with the car I had a bit of misfortune in qualifying when I was slowed on both of my fast laps. Another race without points I cannot afford.”
#31 – Stefano Coletti (MC) – Volkswagen Dallara F308 – Team Signature
Qualifying: 21st place – race 1: 21st place – race 2: 11th place
“On Sunday my car had really good balance and I was able to prove that overtaking manoeuvres are possible at Mugello as well – finally, my pace was right. Unfortunately, the day before nothing fit, it was very hard to drive my car at the limit. Now I’m looking forward to the next race in Pau: I love city street circuits.”
