Over its 10 seasons the Volkswagen Racing Cup has seen a variety of ground-breaking track machinery – like the first-ever diesel-engined car to win a race in the UK and the crowd-pleasing Caddy van racer. The innovation is set to continue in 2010 with the arrival on the grid of a new saloon for championship stalwart Peter Wyhinny.
For, while Peter’s new mount shares many of the components of the Golf GTIs against which it will compete, it will have one important difference: a SEAT badge.
When Wyhinny was Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles he went behind the wheel of the racing Caddy to raise awareness of the Brand and to drive home the message that vans can be quick and handle well also. But now Peter is Director of SEAT UK, he felt it was time to make a different statement.
His 2-litre turbocharged SEAT Leon Cupra is being run as a promotional tool and won’t be eligible to score in the championship, so no points will be taken away from Volkswagen-driving competitors. Peter believes it will be a competitive prospect: ‘The SEAT Leon Cupra is very similar to the Golf GTI in many important respects, not least that it essentially shares the same engine. I’m looking forward to going out there and flying the flag for an important member of the Volkswagen Group.’
Championship manager Melissa Wright added: ‘This is the latest in a long line of promotional vehicles which Volkswagen Racing UK has built and introduced to the championship. The first was the Golf TDI in 2002, which distinguished itself by becoming the first-ever diesel race winner in Britain, and it was followed by the four-wheel-drive Golf R32, the Caddy, the first of the Mk V Golf GTIs and most recently the Scirocco. We’re sure that the SEAT Leon Cupra will prove a popular addition to the field.’
SEAT UK plans to use the Cupra as the centrepiece for promotional activities at the circuits, such as Club SEAT, which offers members (who need not be SEAT owners) the chance to enter competitions and attend car-related events.
The Volkswagen Racing Cup with Fuchs Lubricants, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this season, is additionally supported by Augustus Martin, Ceva Logistics, ECM Vehicle Delivery, Hankook, Milltek Sport, KW Automotive, Superchips and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
