Britain’s Sean Edwards has won the season-opener of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. At the wheel of the Allyouneed by Project 1-run 460 hp new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which is based on the seventh generation of the 911, he took the flag 7.346 seconds ahead of Denmark’s Nicki Thiim (Attempto Racing), who crowned his remarkable chase through the field with second place. Lechner Racing Team pilot Michael Ammermuller (Germany) was flagged off in third. The best rookie on the Circuit de Catalunya was Porsche Junior Michael Christensen (DAMS) from Denmark with fifth. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup kicked off its 21st season with a gripping qualifying on the Circuit de Catalunya. Pole position for the season-opening race in Barcelona went to Sean Edwards. At the wheel of the Allyouneed by Project 1-run new 460 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which is based on the seventh generation of the 911, he was by far the fastest driver on the Grand Prix circuit in Barcelona. Unexpectedly lining up next to the Briton on the first row for Sunday’s race is Poland’s Kuba Giermaziak (VERVA Racing Team). Demonstrating once again the tight competition in this attractive brand trophy series, 21 of the 25 vehicles qualified within just one and a half seconds. Porsche works pilots Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Pilet planted their Porsche 911 RSR on the sixth grid spot in the GTE-Pro class. For Saturday’s race, they share the cockpit of the no91 car with Timo Bernhard. Their works driver colleagues Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas take up the race one position behind them. The new Porsche 911 GT3 R based on the 997 model generation heads into the 2013 motorsport season with extensive modifications. With its widened fender flares front and rear, the successful customer sport racer, fielded in the GT3 classes, looks considerably brawnier than its predecessor. The new aerodynamics generates substantially more downforce, allowing for higher cornering speeds and later braking points. The internet was a buzz with Porsche testing at Sebring today. Earlier, we brought you the exclusive shots from the track. While it was rumored that Porsche might be testing the newest 911 member, it was never really known. Porsche has now come out with an official release and confirmed some of our earlier statements. Porsche AG Team Manthey will contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA WEC Series. Richard Lietz and Patrick Pilet shared driving duties today. Porsche AG fields two new 911 RSR based on the 991 model generation at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours and in the World Endurance Championship. Entry for the newly developed vehicles sporting the starting numbers 91 and 92 was confirmed for the GTE class by the organizers ACO and FIA today in Paris.
