WCF is reporting that Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller has told German newspaper Handelsblatt that they are indeed looking at reviving the 550 Spyder. The classic open-top 2-seater Porsche and would replace the current Boxster and be less expensive.
The 550 Spyder was produced form 1953-1956. Later on the 550 RS “Giant Killer” won the 1956 Targa Florio.
“I can imagine that such a modern version of the famous ‘James Dean’ Porsche would be well-received by our customers,” said Mueller in a story published last Thursday.
A launch in the summer of 2014 would see a mid-engine turbocharged 1.6L unit with 200hp. Starting price will be around €39,000 – about €8,000 less than the current Boxster. A base U.S. Boxster currently sits at $48,100.00.
