American Le Mans Series, round 10 in Laguna Seca, USA

Porsche celebrated the 100th win in the American Le Mans Series at Laguna Seca: With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Flying Lizard Motorsports, Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) won the highly dramatic season final in California and secured the GT2 class championship. Porsche also claimed the manufacturers title, and team championship honours went to Flying Lizard Motorsports.

On the time-honoured race track of Road Atlanta, where the success story of the American Le Mans Series began back in 1999, the 1,000 mile Petit Le Mans race takes off this coming Saturday. The penultimate round of the season on this extremely demanding circuit in the US state of Georgia is regarded, after the Sebring 12 hour event in Florida, as the second long-distance classic in this attractive race series featuring the world’s fastest sports cars.

ALMS: Q&A With Team Cytosport’s Greg Pickett

Trans-Am legend and Muscle Milk creator Greg Pickett returns to the American Le Mans Series this weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course aboard the No. 6 Team Cytosport Porsche RS Spyder.

The only driver in the history of the series to win a race in four decades of Trans-Am competition, Pickett returns to Le Mans prototypes with German co-driver, – former Trans-Am championship winner, Klaus Graf.

Pickett and Graf return to the ALMS after recording LMP1 podium performances aboard a Lola in 2007 and competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2008.

The pair finished yesterday’s opening test session second fastest aboard the Porsche in the LMP2 class.

24hrs Le Mans: Win and energy efficiency award for Porsche RS Spyder

The success story of the Porsche RS Spyder continues: At the Le Mans 24 Hour race, the Essex team (Denmark) celebrated a clear victory in the LMP2 class. The 440 hp sports prototype from Weissach also won the energy efficiency classification ‘Michelin Green X Challenge’ as the car with the best overall efficiency, calculated by the ratio between lap times and fuel consumption. The RS Spyder of the Danish customer team beat its rivals in the LMP2 class by 15 laps. One hour before the end of the race, the RS Spyder of NAVI Team GOH spun off the track while running an easy second under braking for the first chicane on the Hunaudières straight on an oil spill of a competitor, hit the barriers and retired. The Japanese driver Seiji Ara was uninjured.

24hr Le Mans: Double pole for Porsche RS Spyder and 911 GT3 RSR

There is a bad side to the Audi/Peugeot attention grabbing focus… the other classes took a back seat. Either way, LMP2 and GT2 were no less impressive as Porsche took top honors. We mentioned on twitter that the Flying Lizard’s seem a bit off. Radio Le Mans also picked this up and found out all was cool. They we going over strategy, pits, etc. We’ll Joerg Bergmeister came out and showed why they deserved the win last year! Now if Matmut can step it up!

Essex and Goh showed why the Porsche RS Spyder is still the real deal!

A perfect start to the French long distance classic: At the qualifying session for the Le Mans 24 hour race, Porsche race cars claimed pole position in both the LMP2 class for sports prototypes as well as in the production-based GT2 category. Competing for Denmark’s Essex racing as a regular driver, Casper Elgaard (Denmark) qualified the RS Spyder on pole in the LMP2 class in 3:37.720 minutes. The second RS Spyder, fielded by the Japanese NAVI team Goh and manned by Seiji Ara (Japan), followed in second, a mere 0.082 seconds slower than the pole-sitter. With these brilliant times, the two vehicles left the rest of the LMP2 field a good four seconds behind them on the 13.629 kilometre circuit.

We are now into the final days before the Le Mans 24 hour week kicks in! Here is our first preview of the Porsche LMP2 and GT2 breakdown. Once again, Porsche will look to dominate the LMP2 class and take back the GT2 win! Ferrari shall not win!

24 Hours of Le Mans: Strong Porsche line up at long distance classic

Porsche customer teams are well prepared for the 77th running of the legendary Le Mans 24 hour race. The Japanese NAVI Team GOH and the Danish Essex team race two RS Spyder on 13/14 June and are keen to repeat the Porsche double victory from 2008 in the LMP2 sports prototype class. Porsche supports the teams with works drivers Sascha Maassen (Germany/GOH) and Emmanuel Collard (France/Essex). In the production-based GT2 category, international customer teams compete with five Porsche 911 GT3 RSR vehicles this year. In addition, the two Porsche works pilots Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) drive an Audi R15 TDI in the class for the most powerful vehicles, the LMP1 sports prototypes.

Two Porsche RS Spyder to compete in Le Mans

The successful Porsche RS Spyder customer project heads into the next phase. Two teams will again field a Porsche RS Spyder each at the Le Mans 24 hour race (13-14 June). The NAVI Team Goh from Japan and the Essex squad from Denmark are eager to repeat the double victory of the RS Spyder in the LMP2 class last year. Porsche works drivers Sascha Maassen (Germany) and Emmanuel Collard (France) support the teams in their campaign.

Autographed RS Spyder Driving Suit Auction to Benefit Children’s Tumor Foundation

CTF-DriversSuit-012109.jpg The Children’s Tumor Foundation announced today that they will be auctioning an autographed Penske Racing RS Spyder driving suit signed by Porsche factory drivers Sascha Maassen, Patrick Long, Romain Dumas, Timo Bernhard, and Emmanuel Collard. The auction will be conducted on eBay(R) with 100% of the proceeds going to the Children’s Tumor Foundation Racing4Research program, a program that raises money for neurofibromatosis (NF) research. A genetic disorder, NF affects 1 in every 3,000 births and causes tumors to grow on nerves anywhere in the body. The auction begins at 6:00 p.m. (PST) on January 22nd and closes 10 days later.
