Chip Herr Launches from 2nd and Wins Race
Chip Herr qualified his #17 International Autos/North Shore Audi/Clear Capital Audi A4 2nd Saturday morning and drove it to the top of the podium Saturday afternoon at the SPEED World Challenge Touring Car at the Generac 500 at Road America. Herr’s qualifying time of 2:27.454 was 0.4 seconds off of the pole, but starting in the front row he got a good launch and was leading going into turn one. After that he held off the field to take his second SPEED World Challenge Touring Car victory of the year. The win jumped Herr from 7th to 4th in the Touring Car Driver Championship.
After the race Herr commented, “STaSIS put an awesome car under me. The STaSIS guys were all over the data and we learned something from each driver on our team. Then in the race it was fun to be running up front with my old friend Charles [Espenlaub]. He was in my mirrors the whole race, but thankfully I was able to hold him off. I am happy to be on the podium again.
”Piloti SPEED Touring Car Rookie of the Year leader Jeff Courtney in his #99 STaSIS Kenda/MPI Coin/KaravanTrailer Audi A4 almost cracked the top 10 finishing 11th. Jeff qualified 15th and steadily worked his way up the field throughout the race. Courtney is 9th in overall driver’s points.
“Fast” Freddy Baker finished right behind teammate Courtney driving his #18 STaSIS Fred Baker Audi A4 up to 12th position. Baker started a row behind Courtney after qualifying 18th, but moved up 6 spots during the race to finish in 12th.
The strong showing by STaSIS Motorsports jumped Audi to 3rd in the manufacturer standings. STaSIS Motorsports is the highest ranked non-manufacturer back team in SPEED World Challenge Touring Car.
Saturday’s SPEED World Challenge Touring Car race, the Generac 500 at Road America, was aired live on SPEED TV, but will be rebroadcast Wednesday, August 23rd at 1:00PM EDT.
