“Hello again! Today I’m writing to you from Florida where we’ve been busy testing our Le Mans car for this year, the R15 plus, since Monday. Before I left for the United States, I made a quick stop at Audi Sport’s workshop in Ingolstadt. Even there I could really feel that the new season is just around the corner and everyone’s just dying for the first race to start – whether they’re part of our sports car team, the DTM squad or in customer sport with the R8 LMS. The Flying Lizard Motorsports 2007 No. 80 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR ‘art car’, which raced at the 2007 24 Heures du Mans, will be auctioned on Saturday August 15 at the annual RM Sports & Classics of Monterey auction in conjunction with the Monterey Historic weekend. The racecar is offered for sale in its original custom livery, designed by Troy Lee. In addition to the 24 Heures du Mans, the car was campaigned by Flying Lizard as the No. 45 Porsche for the 2007 American Le Mans Series season in its traditional red and silver livery, finishing second in the GT2 championships, and also made a guest appearance in 2008 at Laguna Seca as the Flying Lizard No. 46 Porsche.
As required by the Official Rules of the 24 Heures du Mans, any new driver must perform 10 laps of the circuit, including 3 night laps. For Endurance Asia Team, this obligation applies to all 3 drivers. Darryl O’Young, Philippe Hesnault and Plamen Kralev. The team managed to qualify 3 drivers, despite difficult track conditions and changing weather. It was raining al the day at the track, so it was never completely dry.
Last Friday the SNORAS Spyker Squadron exchanged their base in Holland for the ‘Circuit de la Sarthe’ just South of Le Mans, France, for their participation in the most grueling races of all; the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Dutch team has been invited by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) to enter one Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R in the 24 hour race. The car will be driven by Spyker Squadron Le Mans Series-regulars Tom Coronel and Jarek Janis. The pair will be accompanied by 2009 LMP2 winner Jeroen Bleekemolen.
With the addition of Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, I believe Audi just sent a message to the others. The three teams are so stacked in talent now that they might even have to battle each other in the end. We just saw Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas along with Marc Lieb and Marcel Tiemann put in an amazing performance at the 24hr of Nurburgring. There is now just over 2 weeks to go until one of the hottest races to go down in the history. *This is also the 100th Anniversary year for the Audi brand.
Lets hear your predicitons, post up in the comments!
Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish, Dindo Capello
- Last year’s winning trio again forms a team
- No changes to driver squads that ran at Sebring
- Newcomers Bernhard and Dumas in third Audi R15 TDI
The three driver teams with which Audi Sport Team Joest will tackle the 77th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13/14 have been confirmed.
The Audi R15 TDI designated as car number “1” will be driven by last year’s winners Dindo Capello (Italy), Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Allan McNish (Scotland), the same squad that already won the 12-hour race at Sebring (USA).
*Full race report to follow
It has been a huge weekend for Audi and the Audi R8 LMS car. The car is so new and they are already scoring podiums not only in the FIA GT3 series but now at the ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup (VLN) yesterday. If you don’t see it, I’d say Audi is gearing up for two overall wins in two of the hardest 24 Hour races in the world; The 24 Heures du Mans and the 24 Hours Nurburgring.
The Phoenix Racing car driven by Marc Basseng, Marcel Fässler, Mike Rockenfeller and Frank Stippler placed second in the 4 hour race. Abt Sportline followed in third place with Christian Abt, Jean Francois Hemroulle, Pierre Kaffer and Lucas Luhr.
Fortunately, it was Manthey Racing, in their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR that took top honors.
Kinda surprised not to see Patrick Long in the lineup…
Flying Lizard will campaign the team’s No. 80 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR for its fifth consecutive 24 Heures du Mans, June 13-14 at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France. The team received an invitation to compete in the historic event after winning the 2008 American Le Mans Series GT2 team championship. The 2009 Flying Lizard 24 Heures du Mans driver lineup will be Joerg Bergmeister, Darren Law, and Seth Neiman. All three drive with Flying Lizard in the American Le Mans Series. Nearing the midpoint of the 2009 ALMS season, the team leads in the GT2 championship; in the Flying Lizard No. 45 Porsche, Bergmeister (with co-driver Patrick Long) leads in the drivers’ championship.
The 2009 24 Heures du Mans will mark the first time that Bergmeister, Law and Neiman have driven together as a team. All three drivers have significant endurance racing experience and earlier this year Bergmeister and Law each won in class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Bergmeister in GT and Law overall in the DP class.
