Daytona 24 Hours: Porsche-power wins, race legend says ‘goodbye’
Porsche continues dominating long distance classics. Last weekend Action Express Racing secured victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona with a Riley prototype powered by an independently-developed V8 based on the Cayenne. This marked the 22nd overall win for Porsche at Daytona. Sharing the cockpit were Joao Barbosa (Portugal), Terry Borcheller (USA), Ryan Dalziel (USA) and Mike Rockenfeller (Switzerland). In the GT class, two Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racers, fielded by TRG/Flying Lizard Motorsports as well as the TRG squad, brought home second and third. Race legend Hurley Haywood (61) contested the last race of his active career at the wheel of a Brumos-Porsche. With five overall victories to his credit, Haywood is the record winner in Daytona. Volkswagen presents the world’s most eco-friendly racing with the Scirocco Cup 2010

Today, Volkswagen announced its plans for the new eco-friendly one-make series in Hockenheim. With the Polo Cup and Euro F3 Series finishing their final race of the season, it was great news to hold us over the winter.

Volkswagen has been pursuing CNG or compress natural gas for some time in its vehicles. The Scirocco itself, has already seen a fair deal of racing with the GT24-CNG and in the STCC (Swedish Touring Car Champs). Now it will have it own one-make series like we have with the Jetta TDI Cup capitalizing on VW’s clean efforts.

Volkswagen presents the world’s most eco-friendly racing Scirocco Cup 2010

Yet again Volkswagen proves that it is a trendsetter, organizing a one-make cup featuring Bio-CNG-powered vehicles starting in 2010.

With a CO2 reduction of up to 80 per cent Volkswagen demonstrates that major innovative strides are still possible in motorsport. Following the successful debut of the compressed natural gas-powered Scirocco GT24-CNG at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring, an entire one-make cup has now been designed to enable eco-friendly motorsport. The cup version of the Bio-CNG Scirocco fitted with a two-litre turbo engine delivers up to 199 kW (270 hp). Volkswagen are proving that fuel consumption can be reduced even in the sporty high-end class with the 199 kW / 270 PS strong Golf R, which is now available to order. Thanks to a turbocharged high-tech TSI engine, it uses only 8.5 litres – 2.2 litres or 21 percent less than its predecessor.

24hr Nurburgring: Volkswagen Motorsport 4 hour race report

Successful beginning for Volkswagen at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring: The five Scirocco GT24 cars with natural gas and petrol engines made a good start to the motorsport marathon and are the front runners of their respective classes after four hours of racing.

The Scirocco GT24-CNG of Vanina Ickx (B), Peter Terting (D), Klaus Niedzwiedz (D) and Thomas Klenke (D) advanced to 31st place overall, the “sister car” of Volkswagen Executive Board Member for Technology Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, which is powered by natural gas as well, was running in 41st overall at the same time. The Scirocco GT24 of Jimmy Johansson (S), Florian Gruber (D), Nicki Thiim (DK) and Martin Karlhofer (A) took the lead in the two-litre turbo class SP3T and was in 20th place overall after four hours. Carlos Sainz (E), Dieter Depping (D), Wolfgang Kaufmann (D) and Patrick Simon (D) as well as Altfrid Heger (D), Cheng Congfu (CN), Carlo van Dam (NL) and Franck Mailleux (F) occupied places two and three in class as well 21 and 33 overall.

24hr Nurburgring: Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 cars set the pace

Two engine concepts and best in class twice: The Volkswagen Scirocco cars powered by natural gas and petrol engines set the pace in qualifying for the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring in their respective classes.

In the classification for vehicles with alternative powertrains, the natural gas-powered Scirocco GT24-CNG of Vanina Ickx (B), Peter Terting (D), Klaus Niedzwiedz (D) and Thomas Klenke (D) set the best time ahead of the “sister car” of Volkswagen Executive Board Member Dr Ulrich Hackenberg (D) and journalists Bernd Ostmann (D), Peter Wyss (CH) and John Barker (GB). In the overall classification, the two orange EcoFuel cars occupied places 40 and 49. Last year’s winning car of Jimmy Johansson (S), Florian Gruber (D), Nicki Thiim (DK) and Martin Karlhofer (A) grabbed the lead as the best-in-class vehicle and 41st overall. The trio of the blue petrol-powered Scirocco GT24 was the front runner in the category of cars fitted with two-litre turbo engines. Carlos Sainz (E), Dieter Depping (D), Wolfgang Kaufmann (D) and Patrick Simon (D) clinched fourth place in class and 47th overall, Altfrid Heger (D), Carlo van Dam (NL), Congfu Cheng (CN) and Franck Mailleux (F) finished fifth and 51st overall.
