Audi’s assault on the new Intercontinental Cup next season does not preclude a full-time return to the American Le Mans Series.

Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich has revealed that the German manufacturer is evaluating mounting its first full campaign in the United States since 2008. He said Audi is “looking into whether it makes sense and whether it can be handled” alongside its attack on the new seven-race Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in 2011. Petit Le Mans: Bernhard, Dumas and Rockenfeller join forces with the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

Nico Hulkenberg tetsing the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

When we learned that the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid would be headed to Petit Le Mans, we were stoked. We’ve been following this car with a passion. Take a Porsche 911 GT3 R producing 480 rear-wheel horsepower add in electric motors to kick another 60 kilowatts to the front wheels, when needed and you have the future. Sprinkle in last years Le Mans 24 Hours winners and the GT2 class could be in for an upset. The is not eligable for points, so this will have no effect on the Championship. Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister battled debilitating heat and grueling traffic at today’s Northeast Grand Prix to take the GT class win and retake the championship lead. This was Bergmeister’s fifth consecutive win at Lime Rock, fourth with the Lizards and third together with Long. It’s the duo’s third win this year. In the No. 44 Porsche, Darren Law and Seth Neiman finished a strong seventh in the thirteen-car GT field. (continue reading…)

Patrick Long Puts the No. 45 on the GT Pole for Lime Rock

Patrick Long qualifies the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche

Patrick Long timed today’s rain-drenched qualifying session perfectly to put the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche on the GT pole. Heading out at session start, Long quickly brought the Michelin rain tires up to speed on the 1.51-mile circuit, setting his fastest lap of 1:03.904 on his fifth lap. At the halfway point of the 20-minute session, Patrick still held the fastest time when a red flag forced the field back to the pits. The green flag fell again with six minutes to go, but with heavy rain falling it was clear that no one would be able to beat Long’s time and he took the pole. In the No. 44, Seth Neiman qualified twelfth in class.

Long commented, “Lime Rock is aa great equalizer: the track is tight and technical, with a lot of elevation changes. For drivers, it’s all about what you do with the throttle and brake versus relying on steering and aero. The Porsche 911 gives us great acceleration and traction potential here.”

It rained throughout both of the day’s practice sessions and qualifying. Long added, “We haven’t had any dry running so if tomorrow is a dry race all of the teams will face the same setup challenge. However, I was very happy with the way that the car handled today and I’m confident we’ll have a solid car for the race. It’s going to be a tough one — the depth of GT competition this year is intense.”

In the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche, Long and Joerg Bergmeister are now in second place in the GT championship and the team is in third. Driving together, the duo has won twice at Lime Rock and Bergmeister has won here four consecutive years — 2006 through 2009 — three of those with Flying Lizard. Teammates Darren Law and Seth Neiman will drive the No. 44 Flying Lizard Porsche in Saturday’s 2 hour and 45 minute race.

The race will get the green flag on Saturday July 24 at 2:05 pm ET. It will be broadcast live on SpeedTV and tape delayed on MotorsTV, Sunday, August 1, beginning at 1.

ALMS: Falken Tire Looking for Better Results at Lime Rock Park

Falken Tire at Lime Rock Park

Coming off a herculean effort at Miller Motorsports Park just 10 days ago, Falken Tire, a leader in high performance technology, will race for the first time this weekend at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT in the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix. The manufacturer-supported team suffered a devastating fire to the rear of its Porsche 911 GT3 RSR during Friday practice at Miller, but was able to rebuild the car overnight and finish 9th in GT class, due to both the strong results of its crew and Porsche works and Falken team driver Wolf Henzler, and his partner, team driver Bryan Sellers.
