Both Qualifying sessions are complete and there was drama at the front of the grid. It’s not often that you are penalized for going too fast in a qualifying session, but that is exactly what happened to the Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 458. The Bathurst 12 Hour race has speed benchmarks in place for each class in order to make sure that closing rates between classes do not get too far out of hand. The benchmark for the top class was set at 2:06 and the Ferrari went almost a full half second under that limit. Not only did they lose the pole, but they were handed a 50kg weight penalty that they will have to carry for the rest of the weekend. Congratulations! You were absolutely flying out there. For your effort we would like to award you this chubby 110 pound Labrador retriever. Now go ahead and get the pup strapped into the car. Enjoy the ride!

As I sit down to type up the practice rounds wrap up for this weekend’s 12 Hours of Bathurst, several things occur to me. The first thing that popped into my head was how well I know this circuit. The odd twist to my intimate knowledge revolves around the fact that I Have Never Been to Australia! How can I possibly know the ins and outs of twenty three turns when I have never been on the continent? Several thousand laps around this incredible twenty three turn circuit in a simulator has a fairly profound effect. If you want to have a go up and over the mountain, you can find this circuit in rFactor, Simbin’s GTR series and EA’s Shift2 to name a few. The experience is highly recommended!
One year after the 1-2 for Audi in the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour, an Audi R8 LMS is on pole position again for this year’s running of the Australian endurance race at the beautiful Mount Panorama circuit. A total qualifying time of 6.28.65 minutes, an aggregate of the fastest individual lap times set by the three drivers Christer Joens, Christopher Mies (both Germany) and Darryl O’Young /Hong Kong) saw the number 1-Audi, entered by German team Phoenix Racing, qualify on pole position. The Audi is followed by a pair of Ferrari 458 Italias, with the number 17-Maranello Motorsport entry (Allan Simonsen, Dominik Farnbacher, John Bowe, Peter Edwards) in second place and the identical number 33-Clearwater Racing car (Weng Mok, Craig Baird, Matt Griffin) in third place. The way qualifying works for the Bathurst 12 Hour can be a bit tricky to figure out but positions are an aggregate of the drivers in that car. This put the no1 Audi R8 LMS at the top over a 6:29.61 from the Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 458 Italia. Continue reading ‘Bathurst 12 Hour: Audi Phoenix Racing leads after Q1′

As we head into the final days leading up to the Bathurst 12 Hours, Team Phoenix gives us some thoughts on the weekend. It may be Team Phoenix Racing’s first time at the Bathurst 12 Hours but they are stacked. Christer Jons, Darryl O’Young and Christopher Mies will share the no1 Audi R8 LMS while Mark Eddy, Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff will drive the no2 Audi R8 LMS. Sounds familiar, right? Out of the six, only Jons was not in one of last years Team Joest R8’s that finished 1-2. Continue reading ‘Audi Team Phoenix Racing ahead of the Bathurst 12 Hours’
Last years Bathurst 12 Hour was Audi’s maiden race of the 2011 season. With seven championship titles across Europe in the past 24 months, Audi was very confident in the Audi R8 LMS as they should have been. With a 1-2 in qualifying, Team Joest went on to finish the same and winning the 2011 Bathurst 12 Hour.
Next weekend, Audi customer sport will once again take on the 3.8 mile circuit. This time Team Phoenix Racing will fill the shoes and again field two R8 LMS cars. Christopher Mies, Darryl O’Young and Christer Jons will share the no1 car with Mark Eddy, Craig Lowndes, and Warren Luff sharing the no2 car. A total of 33 cars will be on the grid for Sundays race. Queenslander Roger Lago has unveiled the Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 that he will look to take to the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour podium and like the driving line-up, it’s a stealthy look.
Lago, the reigning and two-time Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge series winner, will team with Fujitsu V8 Supercar ace David Russel and the experienced Wayne Park in a combination that is well and truly flying under the radar in the eyes of those predicting a good result.
