The Spaniard who won the Dakar Rally with Volkswagen in January will drive a bio natural gas-powered Scirocco R as the course-opening car at the 2010 ADAC Rally Germany (19–22 August) on Friday. His team colleague Nasser Al-Attiyah will pilot the eco-conscious vehicle on Saturday and Sunday. The UK’s first people-powered VW Beetle has taken to the streets of Bristol in what has been hailed as a breakthrough in the drive to encourage sustainable power. The Bio-Bug runs on methane gas generated during the sewage treatment process. Waste flushed down the toilets of just 70 homes in Bristol is enough to power the Bio-Bug for a year, based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles. (continue reading…)

Volkswagen celebrated a historic victory in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC): from the pole position, Fredrik Ekblom (S) won the series’ second round at Karlskoga in the biogas-powered Scirocco CNG. His team colleague Patrik Olsson (S) completed the good result with a fifth-place finish. The second race, as well, had a positive outcome for Volkswagen: Ekblom and Olsson took places six and seven. At the Dakar Rally Volkswagen had made history with alternative power as well after having been the the first manufacturer, in 2009, to have won the automobile classification with a diesel engine and repeating this triumph in 2010.
