Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS on pole for Bathurst 12 Hour

Phoenix Racing, Darryl O’Young, Christer Jons, Christopher Mies, Bathurst 12 Hour

One year after the 1-2 for Audi in the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour, an Audi R8 LMS is on pole position again for this year’s running of the Australian endurance race at the beautiful Mount Panorama circuit. A total qualifying time of 6.28.65 minutes, an aggregate of the fastest individual lap times set by the three drivers Christer Joens, Christopher Mies (both Germany) and Darryl O’Young /Hong Kong) saw the number 1-Audi, entered by German team Phoenix Racing, qualify on pole position. The Audi is followed by a pair of Ferrari 458 Italias, with the number 17-Maranello Motorsport entry (Allan Simonsen, Dominik Farnbacher, John Bowe, Peter Edwards) in second place and the identical number 33-Clearwater Racing car (Weng Mok, Craig Baird, Matt Griffin) in third place. Bathurst 12 Hour: Audi Phoenix Racing leads after Q1

The way qualifying works for the Bathurst 12 Hour can be a bit tricky to figure out but positions are an aggregate of the drivers in that car. With that said, Phoenix Racing’s Christopher Mies, Christer Jons and Daryl O’Young had a combined time of 6:28.65. As we head into the final days leading up to the Bathurst 12 Hours, Team Phoenix gives us some thoughts on the weekend. It may be Team Phoenix Racing’s first time at the Bathurst 12 Hours but they are stacked. Christer Jons, Darryl O’Young and Christopher Mies will share the no1 Audi R8 LMS while Mark Eddy, Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff will drive the no2 Audi R8 LMS. Sounds familiar, right? Audi R8 LMS as title defender at Bathurst

Audi win the Bathurst 12 Hour

Last years Bathurst 12 Hour was Audi’s maiden race of the 2011 season. With seven championship titles across Europe in the past 24 months, Audi was very confident in the Audi R8 LMS as they should have been. With a 1-2 in qualifying, Team Joest went on to finish the same and winning the 2011 Bathurst 12 Hour.

Next weekend, Audi customer sport will once again take on the 3.8 mile circuit. This time Team Phoenix Racing will fill the shoes and again field two R8 LMS cars. Christopher Mies, Darryl O’Young and Christer Jons will share the no1 car with Mark Eddy, Craig Lowndes, and Warren Luff sharing the no2 car. A total of 33 cars will be on the grid for Sundays race. Heading in to the final round of the 2011 ILMC series, Peugeot has shown it has the upper hand at Zhuhai. The 908′s have been swapping the top two positions during all practice sessions and now qualifying.

The racing season is not over yet! This weekend we will see the final showdown between Audi and Peugeot. Just as the Audi R18 made its U.S. racing debut last month at Petit Le Mans, China will witness the R18 for the first time. Audi Sport is coming off some strong wins in the DTM as well as auto sales numbers in China. Peugeot has the latest “controversial” win between the two at Petit Le Mans. Audi R8 LMS wins the Bathurst 12 Hour

After 12 hours of racing it still came down to the final minutes to decide the race. The pair of Audi R8 LMS cars dominated the race with zero mechanical issues. After numerous lead changes, Darryl O’Young brought the #8A Audi Top Service in for its last pitstop but Craig Lowndes could not real him in.
