Things got off to a great start for Audi, the Audi R8 LMS and the Customer Sport program. The Bathurst 12 Hour marks the first race of the 2011 season for these three and it could be any better. A 1-2 in qualifying puts the Audi’s out front and sets up a clean get away.
With the new qualifying format, the pair of Audi Race Experience / Team Joest V10-powered R8 LMS cars landed in top spots with combined driver times over the two sessions. Audi Australia #7a posted a combined time of 6:35.3 with Lowndes, Luff and Eddy at the wheel. Warren Luff posted the faster time of the weekend the a 2:09.63. In the second practice session from Bathurst, the second Audi R8 LMS topped the charts. Marc Basseng was the only driver to drop under the 2:12 mark, leading the Wilson Security – Shannons Porsche GT3 Cup S and the Audi Australia R8 LMS in third. The 2011 motorsport season opens with a genuine highlight for Audi: On February 6, Audi race experience Team Joest contests the 12-hour race at Bathurst with two Audi R8 LMS cars. The event at Australia’s most famous race track rings in the extended program for the AUDI AG GT3 sportscar.
The customer sport program started in 2009 with the Audi R8 LMS was restructured for the 2011 season. Further development of the Audi R8 LMS, sales and marketing of the cars and the technical support for customers and importer teams worldwide were transferred to the quattro GmbH. 12-hour race Sepang: Successful Asian debut of the Audi R8 LMS: Frank Biela, Darryl O’Young and Marco Werner finished the “Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race” at the Formula 1 circuit at Sepang (Malaysia) as the overall runners-up with merely a one-lap gap behind the victorious Lamborghini. The 12-hour race at Sepang was started at midnight and ended at twelve noon, local time, on Sunday. Audi Race Experience Team Joest lost valuable time due to an unscheduled change of the brake discs.
