Volkswagen has once again won the International ‘Engine of the Year Award’ for its 1.4 TSI engine in the 1.0 to 1.4 litres category. Thanks to the twincharger principle of an exhaust turbocharger and a supercharger, the 1.4 TSI is seen to have especially high pulling power and efficiency. Today, Volkswagen announced its plans for the new eco-friendly one-make series in Hockenheim. With the Polo Cup and Euro F3 Series finishing their final race of the season, it was great news to hold us over the winter.
Volkswagen has been pursuing CNG or compress natural gas for some time in its vehicles. The Scirocco itself, has already seen a fair deal of racing with the GT24-CNG and in the STCC (Swedish Touring Car Champs). Now it will have it own one-make series like we have with the Jetta TDI Cup capitalizing on VW’s clean efforts.

Yet again Volkswagen proves that it is a trendsetter, organizing a one-make cup featuring Bio-CNG-powered vehicles starting in 2010.
With a CO2 reduction of up to 80 per cent Volkswagen demonstrates that major innovative strides are still possible in motorsport. Following the successful debut of the compressed natural gas-powered Scirocco GT24-CNG at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring, an entire one-make cup has now been designed to enable eco-friendly motorsport. The cup version of the Bio-CNG Scirocco fitted with a two-litre turbo engine delivers up to 199 kW (270 hp). The multi-variable Touran TSI EcoFuel is a real crowd pleaser and belongs currently to Germany’s best-selling vehicle in its class. The latest version is now available to buy with an improved fuel range. Thanks to an increased fuel tank capacity and improved efficiency, the vehicle, fitted with a quasi-monovalent drive train, will cover up to 670 kilometres.

In a robust demonstration of its practical responsibility for the environment and climate protection, Volkswagen plans to introduce many new models into the market this year and next year: each model represents maximized energy efficiency in its own way. The building blocks of the BlueMotion technologies include a number of options, such as start-stop system, energy recuperation during pure electric drive, a new full hybrid system and an SCR catalyser to reduce NOx emissions. All of these models are in line with a claim which is not exactly modest: Volkswagen builds the cleanest, most efficient cars in the world, across the board.
Ok, here we go again… Volkswagen you missed the boat when introducing the Routan here in the U.S. The Touran is a remarkable mid-sized van. A direct competitor to the Mazda5 that everyone loves! We are in the market to move up from our Honda CR-V and the Mazda5 is one the list. As a purist, I cannot purchase the Routan even as nice as it is.
