Audi is back in P1 but with a little twist, a debut and a farewell. If you’ve been following along ALMS and Grand-Am will merge in 2014 and with that no more LMP1 class. At the same time, Audi Sport Team Joest has entered a pair of R18 e-tron quattro’s. The debut comes as this is a first for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, a premiere of a hybrid racecar and a first with quattro drive since 1989 in the United States. Look for Marcel Fassler, Benoit Treluyer and Oliver Jarvis in the no1 2012 car. Lucas di Grassi, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish will share the no2 2013 car. It’s that time of year where all motorsports fans will have their eye on one race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. If, for some reason, you have been out of the loop you will see some changes at the front. Peugeot is out this year having retired their motorsport program. That spot has been filled by Toyota Racing. Both Audi and Toyota will bring hybrid system’s to France. Here’s our fist set of shots from the 50th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. It has been a great time and after 6+ hours of racing Porsche leads the GT class. Leads swapping, Ferrari’s taking each other out and the Audi R8 GRAND-AMs are getting broken in, literally. However that is not unexpected it is a wonderful site to finally see the Audi R8 in race form here in the U.S.

Joerg Bergmeister brought the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche home to a second place finish at the 1000-mile Petit Le Mans today, edging out the No. 55 BMW with a late-race pass. The 2011 American Le Mans Series season comes to a close this weekend at the 14th Annual Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The ALMS flagship race gets the green flag on Saturday, October 1 at 11:30 am ET; the race runs a maximum of 1000 miles or 10 hours. In the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long who will be joined by Patrick Pilet, also a Porsche factory driver. Pilet fills in for scheduled guest driver Marc Lieb, who due to last minute travel issues cannot participate. In the No. 44, Darren Law, Seth Neiman, and Marco Holzer will team up. The trio last raced together at Sebring in March; Law and Holzer have traded off driving duties with Neiman over the season. With a stacked field of 18 cars, the GT class could hold its own race and still end up incredible this Saturday at Petit Le Mans. Joerg Bergmeister was able to round out the top five during todays two hour testing session with a 1:20.446. Jaime Melo, in one of six Ferrari’s, landed on top with a 1:20.102.
