
It was a wet and wild Friday here at Long Beach in advance of the American Le Mans Series at Long Beach race. Torrential rain started at seven am–just in time for the only ALMS practice session of the race weekend-and continued periodically throughout the day. The scheduled two hour and 15 minute morning session was reduced to less than an hour with the cars parked in pit lane under tarps and teams huddled under pit awnings in the heavy rain. After an awesome 12 Hours of Sebring and roughly a month off, it’s back to green for the American Le Mans Series. Now on the opposite “coast”, the teams no take on the streets of Long Beach. Last year, we saw Corvette and BMW going at it in GT with BMW coming out on top. The same was said for Sebring. Obviously, we are rooting for Porsche come the GT war.

GMG Racing, the multi-series professional racing team and premier performance tuning facility for European vehicles in Southern California, will debut the world’s first World Challenge Audi R8 LMS at the Grand Prix of Long Beach for Round 3 of the 2012 Pirelli World Challenge series. The vehicle is just one of five being fielded by GMG for the race, the most of any team, which is fitting for an event practically taking place in the team’s back yard in Southern California. Finishing just one place out of a podium spot in the hotly contested GT Class, Team Falken’s Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, piloted by Porsche Works and team driver Wolf Henzler, and his partner, team driver Bryan Sellers, ran strong all afternoon on the challenging streets of Long Beach, and ended up 4th out of 14 GT entrants during the annual visit by the American LeMans Series to the Long Beach Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious street races in the world, now in its 37th year. The high-consequence Long Beach circuit claimed the No. 45 of Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister nearing the halfway point of the race after an impact with the concrete wall damaged the suspension beyond what could be repaired during the short two-hour race. Darren Law and Seth Neiman fared better, bringing the No. 44 to an 8th place GT finish from its 13th place start.
