Second race of doubleheader weekend begins Sunday at 10:55 am ET
It’s been a weekend full of challenges for the 26 drivers competing in the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series races at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Today brought a new challenge – dry conditions.
The drivers hit the track yesterday, but all-day rain forced the cars to run on Pirelli rain tires. Today’s dry conditions turned the tables on the drivers, as the first of two races this weekend marked the first time that they navigated the 14-turn, 2.225-mile road course on racing slicks.

A weather system moved into New Jersey overnight that brought considerable moisture to the area surrounding New Jersey Motorsports Park. A driving rain greeted the drivers this morning and delayed practice on the 14-turn, 2.225-mile road course. However, the 26 participants competing in this weekend’s two SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup races took to the track shortly after noon for practice and two qualifying sessions.

Heading into the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup season, eight drivers had previous experience in the series. However, for the second time this weekend, a series rookie took the checkered flag with Vancouver, Canada’s Jake Thompson coming out on top today in the #19 ViON car at VIRginia International Raceway.

Big conrgats goes out to Mark Pombo! Superb driving and man was he pushing it through turns 10A/10B. We finally had the chance to meet Mark, just before qualifying. Great guy but he must have slammed a few of the gazilion Red Bulls at the Volkswagen pavilion. These guys are putting forth a ton of effort.
Michael DeNino, in the #36 Castrol / oneighturbo.com, had pole for a few laps and then was dropped to third. Oh so close! Keep an eye on him tomorrow. He is 8th in points and a strong finish could move him up.
Speaking of an eye, thats about all these guys may have open as they go green at 9am tomorrow morning. Ouch.
