Team Falken Tire laid it all out on the table during Saturdays 60th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring. During the week, Team Falken had some strong practice runs with a 4th and 6th. The other days were not as high but showed pace. The week leading up to raceday also showed no signs of engine troubles.
Raceday is here with a morning warmup from 8:00-8:25AM. At roughly 8:20, all hell broke lose with an engine failure. While out shooting the warmup, we saw a tweet about smoke coming from the rear of the Falken 911 GT3 RSR. We immediately headed to the paddock to find out what went wrong. We asked Falken’s Nick Fousekis (Director of Motorsports Marketing) if there were any indicators, he shook his head in disbelief and said no. For the 1,000-mile Petit Le Mans, the final round of the 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron brought a fifth place position in GT class for Team Falken and 4th in the final results for the GT Team Championship, and 5th place in the GT Drivers’ Championship. The title defenders are back: With the first victory of the season under their belts, Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) travel with optimism to the final round of the American Le Mans Series on 1 October on the time-honored Road Atlanta circuit. At the 1,000 mile classic in the US State of Georgia, the Laguna Seca winners aim to conclude the season with another success with their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. One of their strongest rivals comes from their own camp: Porsche factory pilot Wolf Henzler (Germany) has already notched up two victories so far this season from Mid-Ohio and Baltimore. The Porsche teams have made a good start to the Nürburgring 24 hour race. After just over two hours and 17 laps on the legendary Eifel circuit, the innovative Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid fielded by the Porsche Team Manthey lies in second place. Start driver was Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), who shares the cockpit with his Porsche works driver colleagues Richard Lietz (Österreich), Marco Holzer (Lochau) und Patrick Long (USA). The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Manthey Racing with Porsche factory pilots Marc Lieb (Germany), Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) as well as Lucas Luhr (Switzerland) follow directly behind in third place. The Porsche teams are in a good position for Friday’s final qualifying for the 24 hour race. With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Manthey Racing, Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas together with Lucas Luhr posted sixth place. The quartet won the 24 hour race four times straight from 2006 to 2009.
The seventh quickest time was claimed by Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler, Peter Dumbreck, Martin Ragginger and Sebastian Asch in the 911 GT3 R of Falken Motorsport. Richard Westbrook, Christian Menzel, Mike Stursberg and Hans Guido Riegel planted their Haribo Team Manthey 911 GT3 R on the tenth grid spot.
