Audi is starting to the Nurburgring 24 Hours from the front row. In Friday’s top 40 qualifying, Christian Mamerow in the Audi R8 LMS ultra took position two on the grid. N24: Marc Lieb places Team Manthey Porsche sixth on grid

In the newly-introduced top 40 qualifying, Porsche works driver Marc Lieb (Germany) secured a good starting position for the 40th running of the Nurburgring 24 hour race with sixth place. Lieb shares the cockpit of the 911 GT3 R (Wochenspiegel Team Manthey) with fellow factory pilots Richard Lietz (Austria) and Romain Dumas (France) as well as racing professional Lucas Luhr (Germany). The race outing of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid Version 2.0 was trend-setting. The innovative race car achieved the same quick lap times as its top rivals yet used considerably less fuel. Just two broken transmission flanges and a collision thwarted a possible podium spot. The next test under race conditions for the further development of the particularly efficient drive technology of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 is planned for the American Le Mans Series race on the Laguna Seca Raceway in California on 17 September. Scirocco GT24-CNG finishes 27th overall at the 2011 Nurburgring 24 Hour

With the Golf24 gaining much of the attention over the weekend, the two Scirocco GT24-CNG’s were quietly doing their thing. Leading up, testing and qualifying sessions went very well. The no117, driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah, Carlos Sainz and Giniel de Villiers and Klaus Niedzwiedz started 61st. The no116 had Vanina Ickx, Bernd Ostmann, Peter Wyss and Klaus Niedzwiedz (driving two cars) at the wheel and 66th on grid. They finished 27th and 46th respectively.

In 2009, we saw the premiere of the GT24-CNG engine at the 24 Hour. VW went on to a 1-2 in the AT class and a 17th overall. In 2010, VW entered 3 of them, going on to a 1-2-3 win in the AT class. The Porsche teams have made a good start to the Nürburgring 24 hour race. After just over two hours and 17 laps on the legendary Eifel circuit, the innovative Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid fielded by the Porsche Team Manthey lies in second place. Start driver was Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), who shares the cockpit with his Porsche works driver colleagues Richard Lietz (Österreich), Marco Holzer (Lochau) und Patrick Long (USA). The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Manthey Racing with Porsche factory pilots Marc Lieb (Germany), Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) as well as Lucas Luhr (Switzerland) follow directly behind in third place. Nurburgring 24 Hour 1st qualifying report from Porsche

The Porsche teams are in a good position for Friday’s final qualifying for the 24 hour race. With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Manthey Racing, Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas together with Lucas Luhr posted sixth place. The quartet won the 24 hour race four times straight from 2006 to 2009.

The seventh quickest time was claimed by Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler, Peter Dumbreck, Martin Ragginger and Sebastian Asch in the 911 GT3 R of Falken Motorsport. Richard Westbrook, Christian Menzel, Mike Stursberg and Hans Guido Riegel planted their Haribo Team Manthey 911 GT3 R on the tenth grid spot. Volkswagen announces drivers for Golf24 attack on Nurburgring 24 Hour

Big names for the comeback: When the Volkswagen Golf returns to the legendary 24-hour race on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife (23–26 June) well-known Volkswagen drivers like Rene Rast and Peter Terting will be joined on the grid by former Formula 1 racers Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell as well as DTM driver Edoardo Mortara. The spectacular Golf24 with a power output of 440 hp and four-wheel drive will make its racing debut in the “Green Hell” as early as at the Nurburgring Endurance Championship this weekend. Porsche Intelligent Performance: 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 ready for the Nürburgring

Porsche has revised the ground-breaking 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car in all key areas and competes with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 at the 24 hour race on 25 June. With hybrid components now approximately 20% lighter and improved aerodynamics, the GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 achieves comparable lap times with even better fuel efficiency. The output of the two electric motors at the front axle has increased from 60 to 75 kilowatts each, with approximately 200 extra horsepower available to pilots for seconds at a time on top of the 470 hp of the six-cylinder rear engine, depending on the balance of performance classification.
