Audi announces driver lineups for WEC and Le Mans

Audi R18 e-tron quattro, Le Mans 2012

Audi has established powerful driver pairings for its commitment in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The respective entries were confirmed today by the Selection Committee of the ACO and the FIA. Three Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars will be competing at the Spa 6 Hours and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2013. At each of the six other WEC rounds, Audi will be fielding two hybrid sports cars. Filipe Albuquerque / WeatherTech Racing Audi R8 qualify sixth for Rolex 24 at Daytona

Filipe Albuquerque, of Portugal, will start the No. 24 WeatherTech Racing Audi R8 from the third row on the GT grid when the green flag drops for this weekend’s 51st GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Albuquerque’s fastest lap (1:48.282, 118.358 mph) came on his fifth trip around the 12-turn, 3.56-mile Daytona modified oval track. Overall, he was happy with the car’s performance and the fact that the No. 24 WeatherTech Racing Audi was the fastest Audi in Rolex GT heading into Saturday’s race. AUDI AG has achieved another technological milestone in motorsport. On the 80th running of the famous Le Mans 24 Hours, a vehicle with hybrid drive – the Audi R18 e-tron quattro – has triumphed for the first time.

Around 200,000 spectators witnessed a fascinating race with the drama and incidents that are typical for Le Mans plus an impressive demonstration of “Vorsprung durch Technik.” The four Audi R18 cars from Audi Sport Team Joest were the quickest and most reliable vehicles and after 24 hours occupied positions one, two, three and five. Provisional pole for Andre Lotterer in Audi R18 e-tron quattro at Le Mans

No disrespect to Toyota but it was somewhat of a given that Audi would be at the top in most sessions leading up to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Wednesday’s qualifying session was quite eventful and we did see the two petrol powered Toyota TS030 Hybrid on pace but it was the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro on provisional pole.

The 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Andre Lotterer, set a time of 3:25.453s late into the first qualifying session last night. This time was slower than his 3:25.163 earlier in the practice session but was .285s faster than last years pole.
