Coming back from an exciting two days of testing in Austin, JCR Motorsports heads into the Circuit of The Americas weekend optimistically, looking to establish two solid finishes at the world-renowned circuit. Courtney will race the Kenda/RecStuff Audi R8 LMS in two 50-minute double-header sprint races, May 18th and 19th, alongside a total of 19 GT class cars entered into the event. Following an intense battle that saw everything from side-by-side racing to late-race changes of fortune, GMG’s James Sofronas would deliver the prodigious Audi R8 LMS its first victory in the Pirelli World Challenge Series.
“I am really, really proud of this entire team,” stated Sofronas. “We’ve been working hard on this program throughout the off-season and the results really showed this weekend. Many of the guys were actually at the track until 5:00AM to get us all on the track today, and it’s that kind of commitment that put us where we are. The Avon Tyres British GT Championship welcomes a sixth new team to the series this year in Team Nigeria Racing Eagle, a new racing project from the African continent, fielding an Audi R8 LMS in the GT3 category.
The project is the mastermind of Ribi Adeshokan, who has a desire to engage African people into motorsport and develop motorsport into an industry for Africa. After initial plans to run a team in the A1GP single-seater championship were halted when the series folded, Adeshokan investigated alternative options for the Nigeria Racing Eagle project. Mixing things up after seasons spent in endurance racing, Duncan Ende is proud to announce his move to the Pirelli World Challenge Championships for the 2013 season. Ende will drive the no. 24 GMG Audi R8 LMS in the GT class.
Ende joins GMG after spending the past two seasons in the American Le Mans Series. As part of Dempsey Racing’s Prototype Challenge program, Ende notched two podiums in 2012, while the 2011 season saw him score three wins driving a Porsche in the GT-C class. Both Qualifying sessions are complete and there was drama at the front of the grid. It’s not often that you are penalized for going too fast in a qualifying session, but that is exactly what happened to the Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 458. The Bathurst 12 Hour race has speed benchmarks in place for each class in order to make sure that closing rates between classes do not get too far out of hand. The benchmark for the top class was set at 2:06 and the Ferrari went almost a full half second under that limit. Not only did they lose the pole, but they were handed a 50kg weight penalty that they will have to carry for the rest of the weekend. Congratulations! You were absolutely flying out there. For your effort we would like to award you this chubby 110 pound Labrador retriever. Now go ahead and get the pup strapped into the car. Enjoy the ride!

As I sit down to type up the practice rounds wrap up for this weekend’s 12 Hours of Bathurst, several things occur to me. The first thing that popped into my head was how well I know this circuit. The odd twist to my intimate knowledge revolves around the fact that I Have Never Been to Australia! How can I possibly know the ins and outs of twenty three turns when I have never been on the continent? Several thousand laps around this incredible twenty three turn circuit in a simulator has a fairly profound effect. If you want to have a go up and over the mountain, you can find this circuit in rFactor, Simbin’s GTR series and EA’s Shift2 to name a few. The experience is highly recommended!
