
A new and promising opportunity in motorsport opens up for Audi: as announced at a press conference today in New York, the organizers of NASCAR and GRAND-AM plan a US based race series for DTM racecars like the Audi RS 5 DTM.
To this end, a dedicated platform for the spectacular DTM cars should be in place in the USA by 2016. The responsible parties of the ITR have concluded a corresponding cooperation with their partners in America. YouTube member and petrol head NM2255 spotted this badly damaged 2011 Audi RS5. The accident occurred on the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza during a private trackday, but is unknown what exactly happened. The return of the heralded Audi RS line to the American performance car scene officially launched when Forth Worth Audi in Texas delivered the first 2012 Audi TT RS in the U.S. to veteran race car driver Don Istook.
Last year, Istook was one of more than 11,500 fans to sign the Audi TT RS Facebook petition drive, which helped convince Audi to introduce the 360-hp coupe in the U.S. But Istook’s connection to Audi and to the TT performance car line runs far deeper. The Fort Worth native was one of the first drivers to race an Audi Quattro in the U.S. in 1985 and he drove Audi S4 models in the Motorola Cup, which became the Grand-Am Cup. Around 1,800 invited guests representing sport, industry, politics, culture and the media met on Saturday evening in Wiesbaden for the 41st “Ball des Sports” of the “Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe”. On the guest list were also the two Audi factory drivers Timo Scheider and Martin Tomczyk who approached the red carpet in a special car: the DTM Safety Car, an Audi RS 5.
