Today at the 61st Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring fueled by Fresh from Florida, Team Falken Tire raced from a 12th place starting position to be a top contender for a majority of the race before earning the final step on the victory podium. With varying track temperatures, different track surfaces and twelve hours of intense competition, Sebring International Raceway demanded the best from drivers, teams and tires. The Audi R18 e-tron quattro is causing a sensation on its first racing commitment in the United States. In qualifying for the 12-hour race at Sebring (Florida) both hybrid race cars from Audi Sport Team Joest clearly beat the previous qualifying track record.
In the cockpits of the two Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars, Marcel Fassler (CH) and Allan McNish (GB) fought a close duel for the top spot on the grid in the 15-minute qualifying session on Friday afternoon. In the end, the Swiss with a razor-thin advantage of 0.009 seconds prevailed against his Scottish team-mate. The two-time Le Mans winner and current World Endurance Champion took his first pole position in a Le Mans prototype plus his first one as an Audi factory driver. Flying Lizard completed today’s GTC qualifying session for the 12 Hours of Sebring with the fourth and seventh fastest times in class. Spencer Pumpelly will start the race in fourth place in the No 45 911 GT3 Cup car with a time of 2:05.765, and Alex Imperatori clocked a 2:06.059 in the No 44, good for seventh place in class. Today Team Falken Tire completed the final American Le Mans Series test session before the official sessions of the 12 Hours of Sebring begin tomorrow morning. The Indianapolis based team spent the five month off season productively with several tests at Sebring International Raceway to continue the development of their race winning tires. Craig Stanton probably logged more miles preparing for the 61st Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida than he will spend behind the wheel of the no. 66 TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. When he tells you he’s ready for Sebring, he’s not kidding.
Since January 1, Stanton has logged thousands of miles of cycling, running, and rowing seven days a week. So when he received the call to join TRG at Sebring for the ALMS Winter Test, he was ready. This year, he will join Ben Keating and Damien Faulkner for both Sebring and Petit Le Mans, with the Winter Test the first time he had worked with either driver. Audi is back in P1 but with a little twist, a debut and a farewell. If you’ve been following along ALMS and Grand-Am will merge in 2014 and with that no more LMP1 class. At the same time, Audi Sport Team Joest has entered a pair of R18 e-tron quattro’s. The debut comes as this is a first for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, a premiere of a hybrid racecar and a first with quattro drive since 1989 in the United States. Look for Marcel Fassler, Benoit Treluyer and Oliver Jarvis in the no1 2012 car. Lucas di Grassi, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish will share the no2 2013 car. There is no other way to say it… The 61st Mobile 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring is here! The 3.7 mile circuit has just under 4 days until it becomes the concrete beast, eating cars and drivers as if they were mere 1/64th scale Hot Wheels.
