
One of the most beautiful racing cars in the history of motor sport: the Auto Union Type D twin-supercharger racing car dating from 1939 is now back at AUDI AG.
“This is one of the most emotional moments in our heritage work for AUDI AG – we have come full circle,” says Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition. A few weeks ago, the car manufacturer was able to repurchase an extremely rare Auto Union Silver Arrow racing car – consisting largely of original parts. It is the Auto Union twin-supercharger Type D dating from 1939, and is one of the two legendary “Karassik cars”. It’s full throttle for Audi Tradition as the 2012 season gets under way. Car enthusiasts can see its historic vehicles at more than 25 events throughout Europe during the year. In Monaco, legendary Formula 1 driver Jacky Ickx will be at the controls personally to drive the Auto Union Type D Silver Arrow dating from 1938 through the Principality. Nor would the list of events be complete without the Mille Miglia. And this year’s Audi Tradition display at the “Techno Classica” in Essen, the world’s largest historic car show, is twice the size of last year’s: valuable vehicles from the company’s history will be seen on more than 700 square metres of floor space. AUDI AG will be the first carmaker ever to present a selection of its products at the 61st International Toy Fair in Nuremberg. The exhibit booth for the car brand with the four rings will present visitors with a selected range of toy models and new products from the Audi children’s world. Audi Tradition’s annual programme for 2009 is centred on the Audi centenary. More than 50 events have been planned. Two dates are especially significant: on 16 July 2009, exactly 100 years after the company was established, Audi is inviting guests to a commemorative ceremony in Ingolstadt; Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has already agreed to attend. Not to be missed by every enthusiast and friend of the Audi brand: the largest historic motor sport event in the world – the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, where Audi will be putting in a special appearance as ‘featured marque’.
