In today’s 15-minute qualifying session for the American Le Mans Monterey race, Spencer Pumpelly claimed the 4th spot on the class grid in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, with Dion von Moltke taking the 6th spot in the sister No. 44 for tomorrow’s 4-hour race. Seth Neiman will turn his first race laps since last year’s Petit Le Mans as he takes the start in the No. 45, with Pierre Ehret starting the No. 44. The No. 44 will race with a two-driver lineup of Dion and Pierre with the No. 45 adding Nelson Canache Jr. along with Spencer and Seth. Flying Lizard completed today’s GTC qualifying session for the 12 Hours of Sebring with the fourth and seventh fastest times in class. Spencer Pumpelly will start the race in fourth place in the No 45 911 GT3 Cup car with a time of 2:05.765, and Alex Imperatori clocked a 2:06.059 in the No 44, good for seventh place in class. Racing season is on! Earlier today, the American Le Mans Series kicked off 2013 with the annual two day winter test sessions at Sebring. Fifteen entries were scheduled to show up with six of those flying the Porsche flag.

Flying Lizard Motorsports will begin its 2013 ALMS GTC campaign later this week at the ALMS Winter Test at Sebring Raceway in Florida, utilizing two full days of testing on February 7th and 8th. The team will test its new 2013 No. 44 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, running three drivers through the car: Spencer Pumpelly, Nelson Canache Jr., and Archie Hamilton. The first round of the 2013 GRAND-AM Continental Sports Car Challenge would be one of missed opportunity for the pair of BGB Motorsports Porsche Carreras, which showed the speed to run at the front of the field but would ultimately be held back with penalties in pit lane.
The no. 38 BGB / CalciumPro Porsche Carrera of Dr. Jim Norman and Spencer Pumpelly was involved in a big incident during Thursday’s qualifying, when the Ford Mustang driven by Jack Roush, Jr. made contact with Norman in the chicane, causing the Porsche to sustain heavy damage. The team would work throughout the night to repair bodywork and suspension damage on the front of the Porsche, and Norman would have to start the race at the back of the GS field. Less than four minutes were missing for Porsche to clinch its 99th class win at the Le Mans 24 Hours. With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by the IMSA Performance Matmut team, Frenchman Nicolas Armindo, Raymond Narac and Anthony Pons had led the field just a few laps before the flag dropped on the 80th running of the long distance classic in the Sarthe. But in the final minutes, tyre damage robbed the 2011-spec 911 of all hopes for victory. Nevertheless, the joy over second place was huge for the French Porsche customer team. Earlier this week, Flying Lizard Motorsports announced that Patrick Pilet would fill in for Darren Law. With Law out due to scheduling conflicts, Pilet would share the no79 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with Seth Neiman and Atlanta’s Spencer Pumpelly.
