The Audi R18 e-tron quattro is causing a sensation on its first racing commitment in the United States. In qualifying for the 12-hour race at Sebring (Florida) both hybrid race cars from Audi Sport Team Joest clearly beat the previous qualifying track record.

In the cockpits of the two Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars, Marcel Fassler (CH) and Allan McNish (GB) fought a close duel for the top spot on the grid in the 15-minute qualifying session on Friday afternoon. In the end, the Swiss with a razor-thin advantage of 0.009 seconds prevailed against his Scottish team-mate. The two-time Le Mans winner and current World Endurance Champion took his first pole position in a Le Mans prototype plus his first one as an Audi factory driver. LPM1:

Audi is back in P1 but with a little twist, a debut and a farewell. If you’ve been following along ALMS and Grand-Am will merge in 2014 and with that no more LMP1 class. At the same time, Audi Sport Team Joest has entered a pair of R18 e-tron quattro’s. The debut comes as this is a first for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, a premiere of a hybrid racecar and a first with quattro drive since 1989 in the United States. Look for Marcel Fassler, Benoit Treluyer and Oliver Jarvis in the no1 2012 car. Lucas di Grassi, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish will share the no2 2013 car. Today, Simraceway is giving you the chance to take Audi’s 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning R18 TDI for a 24-hour track test drive.

The R18 TDI succeeded the R15 TDI as Audi’s LMP weapon-of-choice in 2010/11. Sporting a stabilization fin, a closed cockpit, and a smaller engine than its predecessor—significant changes both enforced by regulation and inspired by evolution—it went onto triumph at Le Mans and Sebring. Christopher Haase, Audi R8 LMS ultra #1 (Audi Sport Team WRT)

“Obviously, our victory in the past Blancpain race at Le Castellet is giving us a boost. We’re the runners-up in the standings now and at Spa up to 49 points are awarded. Naturally, our aim is to clinch a victory for Audi – no matter which driver team wins the race. Last year, I competed for Phoenix there, and this year for WRT. Both are top-caliber professional teams with a very individual approach. And we’re a good driver squad because Christopher Mies, Stephane Ortelli and I are a perfect fit. Christopher and I benefit from Stephane’s immense endurance racing experience.” Continue reading ‘Audi drivers ahead of Spa 24 Hour’

No disrespect to Toyota but it was somewhat of a given that Audi would be at the top in most sessions leading up to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Wednesday’s qualifying session was quite eventful and we did see the two petrol powered Toyota TS030 Hybrid on pace but it was the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro on provisional pole.

The 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Andre Lotterer, set a time of 3:25.453s late into the first qualifying session last night. This time was slower than his 3:25.163 earlier in the practice session but was .285s faster than last years pole. Lotterer will share the no1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro with Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer. Continue reading ‘Provisional pole for Andre Lotterer in Audi R18 e-tron quattro at Le Mans’
