The Avon Tyres British GT Championship welcomes a sixth new team to the series this year in Team Nigeria Racing Eagle, a new racing project from the African continent, fielding an Audi R8 LMS in the GT3 category.
The project is the mastermind of Ribi Adeshokan, who has a desire to engage African people into motorsport and develop motorsport into an industry for Africa. After initial plans to run a team in the A1GP single-seater championship were halted when the series folded, Adeshokan investigated alternative options for the Nigeria Racing Eagle project. With the first practice session kicking off early this morning, Audi dropped the lead foot from the word go. Warren Luff hit a 2:08.647 in the no2 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS. Just under a second back was Dominik Farnbacher in the no17 Ferrari 458 GT3 with a 2:09.279. Cam McConville pulled the Consolidated Chemicals Lamborghini Gallardo into third with a 2:09.860. Here’s our first set of images from the 24H Dubai. After 10+ hours of racing, we’ve seen a good number of lead changes and only one DNF from the AF Corse Ferrari. At the moment, the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3′s have been strong and running at the top for while now. Porsche has been absent from the front running but there are now 5 in the top ten. Lamborghini’s have slowly exited the top 10 but one is currently running 11th. United Autosport’s two Audi R8 GT3 LMS have been running well and currently 14/16th. After two weeks off, Rounds 9/10 of the FIA GT3 kicked off at the Slovakia Ring. With that said, Reiter Engineering headed straight to the front with pole positions in both qualifying sessions. Albert von Thurn und Taxis laid down a 02:02.058 to Federico Leo’s 02:02.059 in the Corse Ferrari 458… yes thats a difference of 0.001. Top Porsche was down in seventh and top Audi was in eleventh.

After four events in Portugal, Great Britain, Spain and France supporting the GT1 World Championship, the FIA GT3 European Championship now heads to a new country and a new challenge for the next two one-hour races, when it will be the headline series at the Admiral GT3 Racing Weekend in Slovakia this weekend (19-21 August 2011).

The Audi R8 LMS won the most important endurance race for GT cars ahead of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Audi Sport Team WRT overcame the strongest competition during the 63rd running of the 24 hours of Spa (Belgium). The two DTM stars Mattias Ekstrom (Sweden) and Timo Scheider (Germany) and the Belgian endurance specialist Greg Franchi shared driving duties in the victorious mid-engine sportscar.
